Course Description
Drawing & Painting is designed for the student who is interested in the practical experience of making art. The program requires commitment and dedication from the student. Expectations for student achievement and success are high. As this is an elective class, self-discipline and motivation are necessary. Students are expected to demonstrate technical skills, creative growth, and an increased mastery in concept, composition and execution of ideas.
Students will develop a comprehensive body of work, while building a Drawing & Painting Portfolio. In building the portfolio, students will experience a variety of art making techniques and processes, that will emphasize the organization of the elements of art (line, shape, color, value, texture, space) and principles of design (unity/variety, balance, emphasis, contrast, rhythm, repetition, proportion/scale, and figure/ground relationships) as well as quality. The Drawing & Painting course addresses a broad range of drawing & painting related issues and media. Materials to be used will be, but not limited to pencil, charcoal, ink, marker, Conte, watercolor, acrylics, oils, color pencil, pastel, and collage. Work to be performed will include work from observation and the imagination. Students will be encouraged to develop their own personal ideas and engage in critical thinking and problem solving. In addition, students will understand that art making is an ongoing process that uses informed and critical decision making in its development, thus becoming independent thinkers through the means of making art.
Student Expectations
Students are to be active participants in and outside class. They are expected to use studio time productively and effectively. Students are expected to work responsibly in the studio at all times. All assignments are expected to be completed on time. Students are to be active contributors in class critiques and discussions. They will be expected to describe, analyze, interpret and judge art work from various periods in art history and of their peers. Students will also be required to submit written self-critiques of artwork. In addition, students are expected to maintain a visual journal throughout the duration of the course.
Note: Extra Credit work does not exist for this course.
Visual Journal
Students are required to keep a visual journal. In the Drawing & Painting class, art is emphasized as an ongoing process. The visual journal plays a critical role in the development of creative ideas and provides an avenue for informed and critical decision making. The visual journal should reflect exploration in a variety of compositional techniques, concepts, and skills as the student develops their own personal style. Visual Journal work will continue throughout the course and will be reviewed and assessed each quarter. Visual journal assignments will be calculated in the 20% category of the gradebook and may count/weigh more than 1x as deemed by instructor.
Attendance
Attendance will be taken daily. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements for missed work and studio time. 3 days will be granted to make up class work or studio time with an excused absence or the student will receive a zero for the missed assignment. However, at times, there may be particular instances in which a student may require additional time without penalty. Such instances will be handled on an individual basis. Students with an unexcused absence will receive a zero for missed project work and a percentage reduction for missed studio time.
Late Work Policy
All assignments, homework, and project work is expected to be completed on time. Reduction of points for work turned in late is as follows:
1 day = (-) 5 points
2 days = (-) 10 points

Students are expected to actively participate in critiques by showing their work and discussing their own work and work of other’s. Through meaningful, artistic dialogue, critiques will be conducted to provide feedback and constructive criticism to all students. Critiques will be both teacher and student directed in order to provide all students with the opportunity to reflect, discuss, and assess each other’s development and progress. In addition, written critiques will be conducted.
Grading
All studio-based work submitted to be graded is expected to be of high quality and meet all project guidelines and expectations, including writing assignments and self-reflection assessments. A variety of rubrics and scoring sheets will be used in the assessment of student work. Students will receive copies of rubrics as needed for each project/assignment. Additionally, works will be evaluated and assessed in progress through individual and class critiques. Grades will be given on a point based system range of 0-100. 65% is passing.

In order to qualify for reassessment, the student must discuss with the instructor the work to be reassessed and follow all guidelines for successful completion of the project or assignment.
Class Participation
A class participation grade will be awarded each marking period. Class participation grades will count as one major studio project grade each quarter.
