Course Outline

AP Literature and Composition

The “AP” stands for Advanced Placement. If you feel you’re “advanced” when it comes to literature (interpreting and analyzing it), and you’re highly motivated, then this is a course in which you should enroll. If you’re able to make it from September to May, through numerous meritorious novels, novellas, plays, poems, short stories and essays, you will be given the opportunity to take the highly challenging AP Literature and Composition Exam. If you do well enough, you’ll be rewarded with three college credits, as well of the feelings of pride and achievement that come with accomplishing such a feat. Admittance to the class requires reading two novels, and writing two essays on those novels, during the summer prior to your senior year. Slackers need not apply.

Literature includes but is not limited to:

Black Boy
Their Eyes Were Watching God
How to Read Literature Like A Professor
Slaughterhouse Five
Ethan Frome
King Lear
Hamlet
A Streetcar Named Desire
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
All the Pretty Horses
The Handmaid's Tale
Catch-22

English 12 (Senior English)

Senior English is your final step to all-important graduation. In it you will learn skills necessary for the real world such as letter writing, resume creating, public speaking, mock job interviewing, debating, and tactful critiquing. Also examined/discussed are contemporary (sometimes controversial) societal issues. One should emerge from Senior English well versed in the art of rhetoric and the power of the pen, ready to take on the cold, cruel world.

Literature includes but is not limited to:

Hole in My Life
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Beautiful Boy
Me Talk Pretty One Day
Cannery Row

Brighton Beach Memoirs
Winesburg, Ohio
Catch-22
Doubt
