PSAT Information

All Juniors, Sophomores, and Their Parents/Guardians

PSAT testing will take place at Onteora HS on Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 7:45AM - 11:30AM.

Onteora will be administering the PSAT for interested students who register in advance. Please review the frequently asked questions below to determine if your student should take the PSAT.

What is the PSAT/NMSQT?

PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The PSAT is developed by the not-for-profit company College Board, which also develops the SAT, SAT II Subject Tests, and Advance Placement (AP) Program. The PSAT is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT.  It also gives Juniors a chance to enter the National Merit Scholarship Corporation programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.  The PSAT/NMSQT measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills.

Who should take the PSAT/NMSQT?

All eleventh grade students who are planning to apply to college should take the PSAT.  Students in tenth grade may also take the PSAT.  We strongly encourage all tenth graders who are in accelerated math and/or honors English to take the PSAT.

How do you register for the PSAT?

You must register for the PSAT by Friday, September 22nd.  Counselors will be in the cafeteria to register students on Wednesday the 20th and Friday the 22nd.  The cost of the PSAT is $16.00 paid by cash or check (made payable to OCSD) at the time of registration.  Eleventh grade students on free and reduced lunch are eligible for a fee-waiver.  Tests are ordered in advance.  There will not be extra exams for walk-in students.

How do you prepare for the PSAT?

Preparation materials are available in the Guidance Counseling Office or at http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/prep.html

What should I bring on the day of the test?

You must bring several #2 pencils, a calculator, and your student ID card on the test date.  Cell phones will not be allowed.
