HS Principal's Update - May 24

Dear Onteora High School Families,

We are now entering the final five weeks of the school year! It is definitely an exciting and busy time for our students. Over the last couple of weeks, we have watched students attain various diploma endorsements (e.g., Seal of Biliteracy, Seal of Civic Readiness), perform at the spring concert, excel in athletics and club activities, and demonstrate their school spirit during spirit week. As we approach the remainder of the year.  I would like to provide you with a few updates.

Progress Reports
Fourth-quarter progress reports are available online through the student/parent portal. Please keep in mind that many of our teachers stay after school to provide students with homework help, academic support, and Regents review. All of these opportunities are listed in the Academic Help Sessions Calendar on our website.

Regents & Final Exams
In an effort to minimize the amount of testing administered to students on a given day, Onteora High School is spreading out the final exam and Regents examination window from May 30th through June 22nd.  Specific information, including a schedule of exams, can be found on our website on the 2023 Regents and Final Exams webpage.

Summer School
This year, summer school will be held in person at Rondout High School from July 10th through August 17th (8 A.M. to 12 P.M.). Additional information with be forthcoming.

Please note the following information about the U.S. History Regents:

  • The U.S. History Regents will be administered on June 1st beginning at 8 A.M. to all students who are enrolled in a U.S. History course.
  • Students will be provided with the location of their testing site by their classroom teachers.
  • Per NYSED: “All students are prohibited from bringing cell phones and certain other electronic devices, as defined in the script below, into a classroom or other location where a State examination is being administered. Test proctors, test monitors, and school officials shall retain the right to collect and hold any prohibited electronic devices prior to the start of the test administration. Admission to the test shall be denied to any student who is in possession of a cell phone or other prohibited electronic device and refuses to relinquish it. Possession of such a device will cause the student’s examination to be invalidated.”
  • Please note that the results of this assessment will not be available until the state releases the conversion tables during Regents week.

Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about your senior year. Here is some information that I hope will begin to you excited about next year:

  • Your senior portraits will be coordinated by Lifetouch [Prestige]. Lifetouch will be sending you additional information and will assist you with scheduling a date over the summer to have your portraits taken.
  • Graduation 2024: As you know, I have been working with the Junior Class Officers to determine the exact date for next year’s graduation ceremony.
